Veteran's Initiative

The Mental Health Association in Talbot County (MHATC) has an on-going commitment to assist our local veterans. Presently, we are working in collaboration with Mike Bargiband, the Maryland’s Commitment to Veterans Eastern Shore Resource Coordinator, who is located in our MHATC office (Click here to learn more about The Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs). Through fundraising and funding from the Bryan Nicholas Spry Fund we are able to offer direct assistance to veterans in all aspects of life. Read the stories how it has assisted local veterans. We host an annual Homecoming and Appreciation Event for Veterans. This event provides an opportunity for the community to show appreciation to our local veterans and for the veterans to obtain information on state and local resources. We also host an annual Night of Jazz music at the Academy Art Museum during the month of May. Read about the 1st Annual Night of Jazz Event.

The long term goal of MHATC is to develop additional support services, in the form of a permanent drop-in center, where veterans can meet with professional mental health and employment counselors, interact with peers who have shared their experiences, and move forward in their transition to civilian life.

We continue to seek funding for this future program. Section 107 of the Veteran’s Mental Health and Other Care Improvements Act of 2008, Public Law 110-387, requires a pilot program providing peer outreach and support, readjustment counseling and other mental health services. In rural areas such as ours, these services may be offered through contracts with appropriate entities, such as the Mental Health Association.
